6/7/2023 0 Comments Author of the good lord birdI believe that we make sense out of our lives by telling each other stories. I believe that telling stories has a healing power. I want the show to come out today it's a really valuable moment to be studying this story. It's getting to make a much bigger canvas than I ever have in my life, and it allowed us to not throw any of it out. We had the chance to go to Showtime and say, ″Hey, we're in love with this, we want to make the whole book." And we mapped out this plan and they believed in it. Because when I was a kid, the miniseries was always kind of the cheap version of a movie - they didn't have the budget, it wasn't as well photographed. True Detective was the first one that I saw do this really, really well. And it used to be if you bought the rights to a novel, you had to reduce this thing to almost a haiku form it would have to be two hours long, which meant you had to throw out usually 80 percent of the novel. My whole life making movies and acting, you either made a movie or you were on a TV show or theater. For me, the limited series is such a new form, and I was so grateful that we were able to push the shooting and getting to cut the show as kind of one work of art.

Ramachandran's inspired medical detective work pushes the boundaries of medicine's last great frontier - the human mind - yielding new and provocative insights into the "big questions" about consciousness and the self. Some of his most notable cases:Ī woman paralyzed on the left side of her body who believes she is lifting a tray of drinks with both hands offers a unique opportunity to test Freud's theory of denial.Ī man who insists he is talking with God challenges us to ask: Could we be "wired" for religious experience?Ī woman who hallucinates cartoon characters illustrates how, in a sense, we are all hallucinating, all the time.ĭr. Ramachandran recounts how his work with patients who have bizarre neurological disorders has shed new light on the deep architecture of the brain, and what these findings tell us about who we are, how we construct our body image, why we laugh or become depressed, why we may believe in God, how we make decisions, deceive ourselves and dream, perhaps even why we're so clever at philosophy, music and art. His bold insights about the brain are matched only by the stunning simplicity of his experiments - using such low-tech tools as cotton swabs, glasses of water and dime-store mirrors. Ramachandran is internationally renowned for uncovering answers to the deep and quirky questions of human nature that few scientists have dared to address. 6/6/2023 0 Comments Obsession jennifer armentroutSoon he's doing the unthinkable - breaking the rules he's lived by, going against the government to keep Serena safe.īut are the aliens and the government the biggest threats to Serena's life. Josephine, as Napoleon preferred to call her, was born far from France on the Caribbean island of Martinique on June 23, 1763. Now Jason Reynolds, a young adult author until this year, has produced a middle grade novel centered on that must unlikely of sports: track. If our Newbery winning The Crossover by Kwame Alexander taught us anything, it was that. Mike Lupica and Tim Green may rule the field but that doesn’t mean other people don’t make a lot out of athletics. Horse books, for example, just sat on our shelves untouched. When I served on a yearly committee of librarians in New York I’d notice that some books were difficult to get anyone to read. They’ll travel outside of them from time to time but always they return to the books that they like the most. This is a generalization, but in my experience librarians really enjoy reading within their comfort zones. Atheneum (an imprint of Simon & Schuster) |
