It sounds like a great horror book, but there was a lot that bothered me about this. The premise grab me instantly: six friends are trapped in a town that doesn’t exist with creepy dolls that are trying to turn them into dolls too. I was so hoping for something more from this book than what was delivered. The Stokes they are in is a nightmare version of the former town, engineered by a deranged and undead mind, a supernatural machine of wrath that will destroy them one by one….unless they submit to its dominance and become living dolls. The actual town had burned to the ground more than fifty years ago. They discover they are trapped there, as Stokes does not really exist. Six friends are returning home from a night out when they end up in a town called Stokes. I received a copy of this book through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Combining intrigue and scandal, the book delves into expressions connected to religion, ethnicity, nationality, politics, swearing and oaths, and includes contemporary issues like political correctness and elitism.Ĭhoice Outstanding Academic Title 2014 In what was a golden age of British advertising, the notion of the 'peacock male' was a strong theme in fashion promotion, reflecting a new affluence and the emergence of stylish youth cultures. Bad Words investigates the most controversial and provocative words in the English language in a way that is both anecdotal and analytical. He discusses the ways such words have changed over the years and explores how a single syllable or two may possess an almost magical power to offend, distress or infuriate. Philip Gooden shows how and why taboo words and contentious expressions, including those four-letter ones, were first used in English. So what are today's 'bad words' and how are they different from yesterday's taboo expressions? This entertaining guide to the shifting sands of bad language is indispensable in an increasingly divided world in which abuse becomes ever more widespread and vituperative. To be insulted as a 'snowflake' or an 'expert' is arguably worse than being called a **** or a **** or even a ****. Once upon a time, the worst words you could utter were short, simple and tended to be four letters in length. 6/11/2023 0 Comments The couple next door aboutShe imagines all their jaws dropping in shock, the uncomfortable silence." We left our six-month-old baby home alone and went to a party next door. "She wonders what the other mothers in her moms' group would think if she ever told them. Anne clutches a baby monitor as if it's a lifeline. LaPena sets the scene and gets the action quickly: Anne and Marco Conti have accepted an invitation from their neighbors Cynthia and Graham, leaving their 6-month-old, Cora, asleep. Shari Lapena's The Couple Next Door examines the blind fear a couple in upstate New York experience when they return from a dinner party (yes, next door) and discover their beloved daughter is no longer in her crib. Home to Sir Henry and Lady Lucy Angkatell, they invite a select few people over for a relaxing weekend, but things take a sinister turn. Published in 1946, the book’s title refers to the grand house where the action (murder) takes place. Opening sentence: At six thirteen am on a Friday morning Lucy Angkatell’s big blue eyes opened upon another day and, as always, she was once wide awake and began immediately to deal with the problems conjured up by her incredibly active mind. The Hollow fits in with the January prompt ( a story set in a grand house) and isn’t a Poirot story I’d heard of before, so I was intrigued to get cracking.
